Pippo Phonics is a children’s phonics and phonemic awareness app owned and operated by SAY IT Labs, BV (“SAY IT Labs”, “we”, “our”, or “us”). This Privacy Policy explains what information the Pippo Phonics mobile application (the “App”) does and does not collect, how any information is used, and the choices available to parents and guardians.
Pippo Phonics is designed for children. We have built the App so that it works without collecting personal information about the children who use it. This policy is written for the parents, guardians, and educators who install and supervise the App.
If we provide different or additional privacy notices at a specific point of collection inside the App, those notices govern that particular collection. Please also review the App’s Terms of Use.
Summary for parents
The App does not require an account, login, email address, or any sign-up.
Your child’s progress is stored only on the device. It is not uploaded to us.
Speech is processed entirely on the device by our own speech engine. Recordings are not sent anywhere unless an adult explicitly opts in.
The App contains no advertising, no ad networks, and no behavioral profiling.
We do not sell, rent, or trade any information.
We collect a small amount of anonymous, non-identifying usage data to fix problems and improve the App.
Purchases are handled by Apple. We never see or receive payment card details.
1. Information we collect
A. Information stored only on the device
The App stores your child’s learning progress, meaning completed activities, level progression, settings, and similar gameplay state, locally on the device. This information stays on the device. It is not transmitted to SAY IT Labs and we cannot access it. Deleting the App removes this information.
B. Speech input
Core activities in the App ask your child to speak words and sounds aloud. To make this work, the App requests microphone permission.
Speech is processed by our proprietary speech recognition engine, which runs on the device itself. Audio is analysed locally and discarded immediately after the activity responds. Audio is not streamed to our servers, and it is not sent to any third-party speech recognition service. No internet connection is required for speech activities to work.
C. Optional contribution of anonymized recordings
Improving speech recognition for children’s voices requires examples of children’s speech. We therefore offer an optional contribution program. This option:
is presented on an adult-facing consent screen during onboarding;
is off by default and requires a deliberate opt-in by an adult;
covers only short recordings of the target words and sounds spoken during activities;
is not linked to a name, email address, account, device identifier, or any other identifier that would allow us to identify the speaker;
is used solely to improve our speech recognition technology and is never used for advertising, marketing, or profiling.
If contribution is enabled, an adult can turn it off at any time in the App’s settings. Turning it off stops all future contribution immediately. If contribution is never enabled, no recording ever leaves the device.
D. Anonymous product analytics
We use PostHog to understand how the App is used in aggregate, for example which activities are completed, where onboarding is abandoned, and where errors or crashes occur. This helps us fix problems and improve the learning experience. Our PostHog integration is configured for use in a children’s app. Specifically:
We do not collect the device advertising identifier (IDFA), the vendor identifier (IDFV), or any other persistent device identifier.
We do not collect names, email addresses, precise location, contacts, photos, or any directly identifying information.
We do not build user profiles and we do not perform cross-app or cross-site tracking.
Events are associated only with a randomly generated, non-persistent identifier used to group actions within a session.
Analytics data is used strictly for product improvement, stability, and performance monitoring. It is never used for advertising.
E. Purchases and subscriptions
Optional subscriptions are sold through Apple’s In-App Purchase system. All payment processing is performed by Apple. We never receive or store payment card details, billing addresses, or Apple ID credentials.
We use RevenueCat to validate Apple’s purchase receipts and determine whether a subscription is active, and Superwall to configure and display the subscription screen. These services receive only the anonymous, non-identifying information needed to determine entitlement status and render the correct offer. Neither is used for advertising or profiling.
Purchase screens are placed behind a parental gate, so a child cannot initiate a purchase without an adult.
F. Information we do not collect
We do not collect names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses, photographs, contacts, precise or coarse location, health information, or any user-generated content. The App contains no chat, no social features, no user accounts, and no way for children to communicate with anyone.
2. Children’s privacy
Pippo Phonics is intended for children and is designed accordingly.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The App is built so that no personal information is required or requested at any point. Progress remains on the device, speech is processed on the device, and the only optional data contribution is presented to and controlled by an adult.
We comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States and with the requirements of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) concerning children’s data, including Article 8. Where consent is required for the optional recording contribution described in Section 1.C, that consent is obtained from a parent or guardian through an adult-facing screen.
The App contains no third-party advertising, no ad networks, no analytics used for advertising purposes, and no behavioral targeting of any kind.
Links to external content, including our website, this policy, the Terms of Use, and support contact, are placed behind a parental gate that a young child is not expected to be able to pass. The parental gate cannot be disabled.
If you believe we have inadvertently received personal information from a child, please contact us at hello@sayitlabs.com and we will delete it promptly.
3. How we use information
The limited information described above is used only to:
operate the App’s learning activities;
determine whether an optional subscription is active;
diagnose crashes, errors, and performance problems;
understand in aggregate how the App is used, so we can improve it;
improve our speech recognition technology, where an adult has opted in to contribution;
comply with applicable law and respond to lawful requests.
We do not use information for advertising, marketing profiles, or automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects.
4. Disclosure of information
A. Service providers
We use a small number of service providers to operate the App: PostHog (anonymous analytics), RevenueCat (purchase receipt validation), and Superwall (subscription screen configuration). These providers process only the limited, non-identifying information needed to perform their function on our behalf, under contractual arrangements that prohibit any other use.
B. No sale or sharing for marketing
We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise share information with third parties for their own marketing or advertising purposes. We do not participate in any advertising network.
C. Research
Anonymized recordings contributed under Section 1.C may be used internally, and may be shared with research partners under confidentiality obligations, solely to improve speech and language technology. Because these recordings carry no identifying information, they cannot be attributed to an individual.
D. Legal compliance and business transfers
We may disclose information where required by law, court order, or legal process, or where necessary to protect our rights or the safety of others. If we sell or transfer all or part of our business, information covered by this policy may be transferred as part of that transaction and will remain subject to this policy or a successor policy offering equivalent protection.
5. Legal bases (EEA/UK)
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on the following legal bases:
Legitimate interests. Anonymous analytics and crash diagnostics, for the purpose of maintaining and improving the App, balanced against the minimal and non-identifying nature of the data.
Performance of a contract. Validating purchases and providing subscription access.
Consent. The optional contribution of anonymized recordings, given by a parent or guardian and withdrawable at any time.
6. Retention
Locally stored progress remains on the device until the App is deleted or its data is cleared. Anonymous analytics events are retained for no longer than 12 months and then deleted. Contributed anonymized recordings are retained for as long as they remain useful for improving our speech technology.
7. Your choices and rights
Microphone. You can revoke microphone permission at any time in the device’s iOS Settings. Speech activities will not function without it.
Recording contribution. An adult can enable or disable this at any time in the App’s settings. It is off unless deliberately enabled.
Local data. Deleting the App removes all locally stored progress.
Subscriptions. Managed through your Apple ID in iOS Settings.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of personal data, or to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Because the App does not collect personal information and does not use accounts, we generally hold no information that can be linked to an individual. If you have questions about your rights, contact us at hello@sayitlabs.com.
8. Security
We apply reasonable technical and organisational measures appropriate to the very limited data we handle, including on-device processing of speech and the removal of identifiers from analytics. No method of protecting information is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. International transfers
SAY IT Labs is established in Belgium and also operates in the United States. Information covered by this policy may be processed in the European Union and the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the EEA, we rely on appropriate safeguards, including the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes affecting the optional recording contribution will be communicated in the App, and renewed consent will be requested where required.
